How to Check if an iPhone Is iCloud Locked Before You Buy

What an iCloud lock is

Activation Lock is part of Apple's Find My feature. When it is on, the iPhone is tied to the owner's Apple Account. After a reset, the phone asks for that account's password before anyone can use it.

Without the original owner's password, there is no legitimate way to remove it. Services that claim to 'bypass' iCloud for a fee should be avoided. A locked phone is only worth its parts.

Check 1: The phone opens to the Hello screen

The safest state for a used iPhone is fully erased, showing the 'Hello' setup screen. Go through setup with your own Apple Account, or at least until you reach the Wi-Fi and activation step.

• If it asks for a previous owner's Apple Account or passcode, it is locked. Do not buy it.
• If setup continues normally, Activation Lock is off.

Check 2: If the phone is not erased

If the seller hands you a phone that is still set up, open Settings and tap the name at the top. If someone is signed in, ask the seller to sign out in front of you. Then erase the phone from Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings, and check the setup screen as above.

Never accept 'I'll remove it from my account later'. Do it on the spot.

Check 3: Look for Remote Management (MDM)

Company phones are often enrolled in Mobile Device Management. An MDM-locked iPhone can show a 'Remote Management' screen during setup and can be controlled by the company.

• During setup, watch for a 'Remote Management' screen.
• On a set-up phone, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for profiles you do not recognise.

Check 4: IMEI and blacklist status

Dial *#06# to show the IMEI. Make sure it matches the IMEI in Settings > General > About and on the SIM tray or box. A mismatch is a red flag.

You can also enter the serial number at Apple's official Check Coverage page to confirm the model and warranty status. Blacklist (reported lost or stolen) status can be checked through IMEI-check services, but results vary by service and country, so treat them as one signal, not a guarantee.
