How to Check a Used MacBook Before Buying: Full Inspection Guide

Before you start

Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes with the MacBook, a charger, and ideally a USB drive or phone cable to test the ports. Ask the seller for the charger that comes with it, not a borrowed one.

Step 1: Confirm the model and specs

Click the Apple menu > About This Mac. Check the chip (for example Apple M1, M2 or Intel Core i5), memory and storage against the listing. Then note the serial number and check it on Apple's Check Coverage page.

Step 2: Check Activation Lock and MDM

Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu > System Information. Under Hardware, look for 'Activation Lock Status'. It should say Disabled.

Then open System Settings > Privacy & Security, or System Settings > General > Device Management, and check for management profiles. A company-managed Mac can be locked or wiped remotely.

Step 3: Battery health and cycle count

In System Information, open Power. You will see the Cycle Count and Condition. On recent macOS versions you can also go to System Settings > Battery and click the info button next to Battery Health.

• Condition 'Normal' is what you want
• 'Service Recommended' means the battery needs replacing soon, so factor that into the price
• Lower cycle counts are better, but condition matters more than the number alone

Step 4: Screen, keyboard and trackpad

• Open a fully white and a fully black image full screen and look for dead pixels, bright spots or stains
• Check the screen edges for coating wear, a known issue on some older MacBook Pro models
• Type every key in a text editor, including function keys and Touch ID if present
• Click the trackpad in all four corners and test two-finger scrolling

Step 5: Ports, camera, speakers and Wi-Fi

• Plug the charger into every USB-C port and confirm it charges
• Connect a USB device to each port
• Open Photo Booth to test the camera and microphone
• Play a video to test both speakers at high volume
• Connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Step 6: Run Apple Diagnostics

Apple Diagnostics is built in and checks hardware in a few minutes.

• Apple silicon Macs: shut down, press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command-D
• Intel Macs: restart and immediately hold the D key
• Note any reference codes and search them on Apple's support site
