Refurbished Grades Explained: What Grade A, B and C Really Mean

Why refurbished devices have grades

Two refurbished iPhones of the same model can look very different. One may be almost flawless, the other may have light scratches on the frame. Grades exist so you know what you are paying for before the box arrives.

The important thing to know first: there is no single official grading standard. Every seller and marketplace uses its own definitions. That is why you should always read what a specific shop means by each grade, not just the letter.

Grade A: excellent condition

Grade A devices look close to new. You may find very small marks if you look closely under bright light, but nothing visible at normal viewing distance.

• Screen: no scratches visible when the screen is on
• Body: minimal or no signs of use
• Best for: gifts, or buyers who care about appearance

Grade B: good condition

Grade B devices show light signs of use, usually small scratches or scuffs on the frame or back. They work exactly the same as Grade A. For most people, Grade B is the best balance of price and condition.

• Screen: may have faint marks, not visible when the screen is on
• Body: light scratches or small scuffs
• Best for: everyday use, especially if you use a case anyway

Grade C: fair condition

Grade C devices have clear cosmetic wear such as deeper scratches or small dents. They should still be fully functional. They are the cheapest option and make sense as a work phone, a backup, or a first phone for a child.

What grades do NOT tell you

Cosmetic grade and function are two different things. A Grade A phone with a weak battery can be a worse buy than a Grade B phone with a healthy one. Before you buy, also ask about:

• Battery health percentage
• Whether any parts were replaced, and if they are genuine
• Warranty length and what it covers
• Whether the device is fully unlocked and free of iCloud or MDM locks
